America tried to build a World Empire using pre-eminent technology and overwhelming wealth to dominate the planet. She failed where 19th Century England succeeded because America’s elite saw greater wealth in moving their factories to areas where wage rates were lower and you cannot build an empire with a dog eat dog society.
To prosper a country must either have a powerful manufacturing base or be a mine for raw materials. England’s wealth was built on coal and Europe and America on technology. Now we have given our technology to China and the possession of oil is the road to riches. Russia and many small nations dominate the oil market and American made factories make China the dominant manufacturing power. America is losing importance in trade.
China will never accept her industry being taken away from her and with a country now so fiercely nationalistic who will dare confront her.
World Socialism saw globalism as a means to give Western riches to the Third World,but the planet is not big enough to make all the world as rich as America. In fact we now have a Third World population explosion and a planet on the brink of starvation.
Boutros Boutros Ghali wants the U.N. to be given the power to control food supplies,oil and immigration,but says nothing about birth rate. Who if any body will benefit from this arrangement? The present rate of yearly population increase of the World is 100 million but it is going up.
One U.N. estimate of world population by 2050 is 9 billion people,another 12 billion,both are catastrophic for the planet.
Rising nationalism and new trade barriers will challenge globalisation. Few companies can stand against the wealth of new predator sovereign funds,based on vast revenues from oil or the dominance of China as a manufacturing power.
Nationalism is the only means by which individuals can have a say in their future.
Even 100 million Australians would not matter in a planet of 10 billion. World rationing would mean that we all would starve. The Socialists and N.G.O.s would see to that.
