Unless Australians agree to living in flats and terraces, there is no way we can live and work without the car.
An article in The Australian 17.3.08,p.36,points out that London with 8 million people crams them into 1600 sq. kilometres, whereas Melbourne with a smaller population needs 8000 sq. kilometres. There is no way that public transport in Melbourne can cope with the needs of her people, they have to have a car and petrol.
I cannot see any Australian government ordering Australians to give up the 1/4 acre block and live in a flat and which green politician will say that all cars leaving the city to visit the countryside at the weekend should pay a heavy toll similar to Londoners who have to pay to bring their cars into the city.
What is the point of living in Australia if you cannot enjoy it’s vast space.
