Reading the obituaries in the Wesstern papers is interesting reading. According to the pro-communists,he and his family were corrupt and criminal and he was a general too.
What they do not say is that he stopped a communist coup,like that of Pol Pot,that would have resulted in a blood-bath in which millions would have been slaughtered. That would have been preferable to our left-wing journalists.
Most commentators agreed that Suharto had pulled his country out of chaos and gave it stablility after the Dutch were kicked out.
Democracy does not work in the Third World. The communists know that and so did Suharto who was the Nationalist strong man that Indonesia needed.
