The Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance

Those of us who lived in the years prior to the Second World War will remember the politically correct of those years telling us,‘Hitler is a good man,he has helped
Germany recover from the First World War,he does not want war. Let us not rearm it will only provoke him and make him feel insecure. He is a reasonable man who wants the best for his people. War is wrong, let us talk about our differences in the League of Nations like all reasonable people.’ The only problem was that tyrannies see debate as weakness. As a result Germany was allowed to take over parts of Europe,Italy parts of North Africa and Japan parts of China and all Korea without a fight.

Before the Second World War Stalin and Hitler made a non aggression pact and after the fall of France neither the U.S. nor Russia came to the aid of England. Some of Churchill’s cabinet wanted to make peace with Germany after the fall of France, there can be no doubt that that may have seemed the prudent course. Russia grabbed its share of Poland and did not help us during the battle of Britain so why should we have gone to the aid of Russia when Hitler attacked her? Churchill took the long view of history and grabbed an ally no less tyrannical than Germany but perhaps further away.

China shows similar tendencies. The Chinese ambassador to Australia,Madame Fu Ying, stated in a recent article (Advertiser Review 23.4.05) that “the Taiwan question is a very important issue that bears on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and stays close to the heart of 1.3 billion Chinese people”,the ambassador wants a “peaceful” resolution to the question,Beijing, however, threatens to use force. The only question is “when” will Taiwan surrender to China?

The politically correct in Australia say,do not get involved. These people never learn from history! China is still a totalitarian state prepared to take what it wants by force as it has shown with Tibet and threatens to do with Taiwan.

The U.S. is our only hope.
